American Navy personnel and their families didn’t get the chance to celebrate Independence day on base this year in Yokosuka, Japan. No 4th of July fireworks, no on-base activities for families, basically nothing. Why? Because some jackass in Okinawa (not even a military member) raped, and then killed an Okinawan local. Then, an American service member was arrested for a DUI after crashing into a couple of cars and sending an Okinawan to the hospital.
All US Naval Forces in Japan were restricted to base and restricted from drinking alcohol, even at their place of residence for a week at the beginning of June. The off base restriction was lifted, but the ban on alcohol remained, for off base only. Finally about a week or two before Independence Day, the off base restriction on alcohol was lifted.
Around that same time, word was put out that the Naval bases in Japan would not be hosting fireworks or other celebrations on base.
This year, to demonstrate our unwavering respect for the loss our friends in Okinawa recently experienced, by order of U.S. Forces Japan, no U.S. military installations in Japan will celebrate the Fourth of July holiday with fireworks or concerts.
There is so much wrong with this, but I won’t even get into that here. So, we decided to have our own fun. We went Mario Karting in Tokyo. What a blast. Check out the fun below.
